A destination in itself, fine dining, award-winning winery, and gardens....

Karen LOVED her visit to the Westport Winery. It was winter at the time, and although the gardens were at rest for the winter, the dining and the wines were well worth returning for.

Per TripAdvisor: "In 2017 the Westport Winery Garden Resort was named Greater Grays Harbor Business of the Year. USA Today named the Sea Glass Grill at Westport Winery Garden Resort one of the top five winery restaurants in the nation. The business has been voted Best Winery by King 5 Evening Magazine. In 2016 Westport Winery was honored as one of the top twenty most-admired wineries in North America by Winery & Vineyard Management Magazine. The business earned Best Winery, Best Wine Shop, and Best Boutique Winery for 2016 by South Sound Magazine. They received the Grays Harbor Environmental Stewardship Award in 2015."

Grays Harbor Historical Seaport is the non-profit organization that operates the Lady Washington, a full-scale reproduction of the tall ship that was the first American vessel to visit the West Coast. Aberdeen is its home port; however, it visits ports up and down the West Coast.

Where is Lady Washington today? Check the website for the current location of the Lady Washington as she may or may not be moored in the harbor. If the boat is in the harbor, you can take an outing on it into the harbor, possibly with mock cannon battles with the Hawaiian Chieftain, a second full-scale schooner.

Covid-19: Grays Harbor Historical Seaport offices are temporarily closed due to Washington state Covid closures. However, the Lady Washington is still giving tours at the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Landing on Saturdays and Sundays. Tours are free; register at the website above.

Aberdeen Museum of History - Google Map

TripAdvisor: Tripadvisor Reviews of Aberdeen Museum of History in Aberdeen WA

For the history buff - several Aberdeen WA activities focused on the past. Housed in the historic Aberdeen Armory Building, this charming museum contains exhibits of local history and events. Do your own research at their research facility, leaf through rare books, historical photographs and more.

Also, ask about the Kurt Cobain Walking Tour. The museum is free, although donations are accepted and appreciated.

Kurt Cobain Riverfront Park

Kurt Cobain Riverfront Park

Located at the Young Street Bridge at the end of E. 2nd St., Aberdeen, WA 98520.
Aberdeen, hometown of Kurt Cobain, has set aside a tiny memorial park near the Young Street Bridge over the Wishkah River. A large guitar sculpture and plaques on the premises commemorate Kurt Cobain.

A bit of history: Kurt Cobain's Aberdeen

If Nirvana is your thing, then "come as you are" and pay your respects. Just note that there is no dedicated parking; find a side street on which to leave the car (Stanton Street, 2nd Street), and walk to the park.

Aberdeen Waterfront Walkway and Morrison Riverfront Park

For Aberdeen WA activities that involve walking, here is a 1.56 mile (2.51 km) walkway along the north shore of the Chehalis River east of the Wishkah River Bridge. At the halfway point (roughly) is the Morrison Riverfront Park, a grassy area with picnic tables and playground equipment. Bring your lunch, stroll along the waterfront, and enjoy the country vibe.

The west trailhead is located at the intersection of South Kansas Street and East Heron Streets. It heads off to the east behind the Best Western Plus Aberdeen Hotel, which backs up to the Wishkah River.

The east trailhead is located at the point where Sargent Blvd turns into Junction City Road, not far from Hwy 12.

There are parking areas at both ends of the walkway, and parking at Morrison Riverfront Park.

Chehalis River Surge Plain Natural Area Preserve

Explore the Chehalis River Surge Plain Natural Area Preserve

Another of several Aberdeen WA activities is provided by the Chehalis River. It snakes in multiple slithering tributaries across a surge plain that is up to two miles (3.2 km) wide at the widest area. None of that is actually visible from the ground; however, at Preacher’s Slough Road, you will find the trailhead for two easy walking trails:

  • Preacher’s Slough Trail is 3.6 miles long (5.8 km one way), and parallels Blue Slough Road from Blue Slough to Preacher’s Slough Road.
  • Riverside Fishing Trail is 0.6 miles long (0.96 km one way) and is ADA-accessible. This is an easy walking trail along the banks of the main branch of the Chehalis River.

This is an opportunity for a rain forest stroll along a wide river, and a picnic lunch if you bring one.

Getting there: From Highway 101 South in Aberdeen, cross the Chehalis River and take Blue Slough Road to Highway 107. Take Highway 107 to Preacher’s Slough Road, and turn north (left). Find the parking area and trailhead for both trails here. (There is also an access point for Preacher’s Slough Trail at its far end if you prefer. Look for signs for a Blue Slough boat ramp and small gravel parking area.)
